What Is MCT Oil & What, Exactly, Does It Do For You?

Want to lose weight, have more energy, stay focused at work? Thought so. Check out MCT oil.

There’s a good chance you’ve heard the buzz about adding healthy fats to your diet. We, of course (and like you, no doubt) honor and bow to the almighty avocado as a key source of this healthy fat, but now there is another player in the healthy fat scene: MCT oil.

The MCT in MCT oil stands for medium chain triglycerides, which are composed of caprylic and capric fatty acids that occur naturally in coconut oil and other foods. MCTs are easily converted into energy by the body, rather than stored as fat, and also support efficient absorption of fat-soluble nutrients. Put in another way, MCTs helps your metabolism burn fat, literally (and incredibly) giving truth to this delightful little equation: Eat fat = burn fat.

MCTs also reduce sugar cravings, encourage alertness for a prolonged period of time, and provide lasting fuel for your body (meaning no more mid-morning or mid-afternoon lulls resulting from a dip in blood sugar levels). Other benefits (but wait, there’s more!) from a daily dose of MCTs include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight, thanks to feeling full and satiated longer (think less sugar cravings)
  • Reduction in body fat due to the increased metabolic function
  • Increase in energy
  • Increase in cognitive function
  • Assisted digestion
  • Overall better mood
  • Assistance in absorption of fat-soluble nutrients from various foods

Now how to get those MCTs? Back to MCT oil, which is a liquid that is added to hot or cold beverages for a nutritional boost, a la olive oil. Dave Asprey of Bulletproof Exec famously brought MCT oil into the limelight when he introduced bulletproof coffee (AKA “butter coffee”) into the world. The idea behind it was to mix your morning cup of joe with healthy fat and protein, reducing coffee jitters and providing a bit of nutrition in the process.

Worth noting? The key is to start slow. I recommend one tablespoon for 30 days as an experiment. And , remember, because the oil is tasteless and odorless it can be added to more than just coffee — a bowl of soup, green smoothie, bone broth or protein shake.

So, go on: Try it out, and take note of how your focus increases and waistline decreases.
